Home Improvments

So, you think Alec has been laying around whining about chemo? Yeah RIGHT! As usual he has been busy, busy, busy. Here is the proof...

Today he cleaned gutters. (Boring, glad it was a weekday and I didn't have to help)

I also brought home two lights (wicked deal, $49 marked down from $300!) And he put those up withing minutes.

Earlier this week...

We had this fugly cubby hole, that was once covered by a curtain when it was a pantry. I tried making it look pretty with baskets, but it didnt look so good.
Before...

I kind of described what I wanted, and Alec took one look around the basement, scrapped together some old wood and made me these wonderful cabinet doors! Only costs $30 (hinges, sheet metal, door knobs)

After...

Pretty Cute Right!??

He also put these lights in for me within minutes of walking them through the door...

I know its braggy, but I love having a handyman hubby. It really is so cool and I am so lucky!

I guess to sum it up, you know Alec is feeling good when he's running around the house checking things off my "Honey DO List".

I will have a few more projects this weekend, lets see what he can do!

Love to all,

Heather & Alec

2 down, 2 to go!

Alec had his second chemo cycle on Monday and we are halfway done! Things went much smoother and he is feeling pretty good! I think we have too much fun with his nurse Kaite, sometimes we have to keep our laughter in check, afterall there are other patients who are not having as much fun as we are. The side affects of the bone shot will probably kick in tomorrow, but he has been moving around and taking on all kinds of projects around the house.

We had 12 days of Finn...(and fun.) While my parents were in Florida, Alec and I doggy sat my furry little brother, Finnigan. We had so much fun, and it is confirmed, blondes (even dogs) have more fun.

Although the week started off a little scary (remember he pooped on our bedroom curtians!?) He got used to our rules and by the end of the 2 weeks I was trying to convince Alec we need another dog. (Not gonna happen)

Last weekend we had a night on the town in Portland with Alec's BF's, John and Jaime. We had such a fun night and their kids are too cute. It is really good to get out of the house on a weekend (espcially for Alec who is home all week)! On Sunday we had the pleasure of spending the day with my sisters, Julia and Bob and Maker. And topped it off Sunday night with a Blizzard from DQ.(Buy one get one for 25 cents!) What a great weekend!

THanks for all your prayers! We are so blessed!

LOve,

Heather, Alec, Millie, Finn!
Here are some photos of Julia and the doggies!

Run for Your Life!

What a run!

Thank you all who came out to cheer the DeMarco sistahs on! Thank you to all who donated so we could run 26.2! Jilly, Tina and I had a great run. I really had never felt better...around mile 16 I got my "second wind" and really felt as though I had wings! It was amazing. Boston is certainly the best marathon and there are so many inspirational stories. As I took the last corner and saw the finish line, I became so overwhelmed. I had to take deep breathes so I would not start to cry (happy tears). I think the marathon can be compared to what we are going through and to see the end gave me hope that soon enough we will cross that finish line!

How they compare:

Its a long road. But you know there is a finish line. There are so many friends and family cheering for us. There is a heartbreak hill. You must take good care of yourself and each other along the way. Sometimes you think you cant do it. Sometimes you feel like you are being carried. You meet so many wonderful people. There are lots of people who are affected by cancer and run to honor or remember a loved one. God is always with us. You look back and say "did I really just do that!!??"

I have never felt better post race. No soreness, no limping, no complaints! Must be the bottle of wine Jill, Tina and I shared the night before the marathon. Or maybe the 4 Blue Moons I drank post marathon. Remind me if I ever run another, forget the gatorade and gu...I should just drink the good stuff.

Again, thank you for all your support we could not have done it without you!

All our Love!

Heather, Jill, Tina

First week of R-CHOP

Well, Spring has sprung and round 2 of chemo begun. Alec started his lymphoma treatment this week. The first day of chemo is the longest,(we did not get home until 10pm!) they have to slowly administer the Rituximab because it can cause side effects instantly and he has to be monitored. He did have a minor reaction, an itchy sensation around his ear, nose, throat. I guess this means the drug was actually attacking the area where the cancer cells were! (Remember the lyhpmona started in his throat?) Weird Right? At least we know the drug is working and working quickly. The rest of the drugs were administered over an hour or so. Katie, Alec's nurse took excellent care of him, and it was good to see her. Although Alec said he wishes we were just meeting up in a bar and not the chemo floor. We are very happy she was able to take care of him and we did not have to see anyone else! (She specializes in GI cancers and was not too familiar with this regimen, but did a great job)

Side effects are nausea, tiredness, low blood counts, hair loss and a few other minor ones. He has been feeling a little nausea in the mornings but if he stays on top of his drugs he is able to keep it under wraps. Since Alec has 2 types of cancers, Dr. Tek is hitting him real hard with chemo. Most patients have a three week cycle, but Alec has a two week cycle so we can get this over ASAP and start with the colorectal chemo again. I find it so facinating that all these poisons are put into his body, but kills the cancer. I read "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" and it was an interesting insight into how chemo/radiation all started. Doctors were so determined even back in the early 1900's to defeat cancer. They tried everything, one doctor would go to a farm every morning to a chicken coop, take a chicken placenta and add other animal parts, potions, etc to try to find a cure. Incredible what it took to come up with these drugs that now CURE cancer.

Last weekend we went out with Lizzy and friends and family to an excellent Greek restaurant in Portland to celebrate her Birthday. It was so much fun and great to get out for a night on the town. Thank You!

We are hanging in this weekend, getting ready for the big marathon! Cant wait. Hopefully Alec will be feeling better this week...we have lots to do around here before the Stripers move up. I learned how to sew a few weeks ago...Alec is already talking about having a "pillow intervention" I must have sewed 12 pillows by now and next on my list are the chaise lounge cushions! He just doesn't get the purpose of "throw" pillows. He hates them. But I have them everywhere, (I would hate to count how many, including the porch furniture, he may be right with a "pillow intervention!").

Holy cow...Katie (Alec's nurse) warned us that he would be hungry because of the prednisone, let me tell you...I have never seen him eat so much! He had two desserts, after dinner tonight, just polished off a box of cheez-its and is now eating a chocolate bar.

Poor Julia had pneumonia and was at Childrens for a couple days. I guess she is feeling better and is home, but please say an extra little prayer for her. POor baby, she has been through so much.

Thank you for all your prayers and support. We are so lucky.

All our Love,

Heather, Alec, Millie & Finn!

Spring Fling

Hope you all had a wonderful Easter! We had a great weekend and thank you to all for coming out to support (or did not come but still donated) to the Quinn/Kenny/Ford Foundation for Brain Tumor Research. We had such a fun night and raised money for a very important cause and feel very ready for 26.2!

A special thanks to those of you who helped out and donated a fabulous prize! And congrats to those who won!

I am not going to lie, I cant wait for the marathon to be OVER! A 21 mile run on a Monday night is not what I call fun! I am just very glad that my sisters are running along my side. We always have some very interesting conversations and sometimes I wonder if it is possible for us to run out of topics. I don't think so.

Here are a few photos from the Spring Fling...

The Runners

Feehan Gals! (Cat in the front is running too, but she qualified cuz she is wicked fast!)

Lucky Nana with her "boys"

Julia and her Daddy

OK, who is cuter....Millie OR....

Julia?

I know, I know, its Julia. She is so precious!

Millie and Finn having fun on Easter

Can you all believe this weather!?? I just cant get enough. Sunshine just makes everyone so happy! Caryn and I went for a walk tonight on the beach and it felt like July! Millie was swimming after balls the entire time and had a blast.

Alec is doing well, he worked on his boat all week, getting it ready for Striper season! He starts chemo on Monday...not sure what to expect, but hoping for the best.

Please say a prayer for my friend/co-worker Meri, her sister lost her battle to breast cancer this week. I am so very sorry for her and her family. She has been in my prayers and thoughts. Amy's friend Jen also lost her battle to brain cancer 2 weeks ago, sending prayers and love to her and Jens family.

Thank you again for your support this weekend. We just hate cancer in all forms and will do anything to kill it. Including run for it. And we are constantly reminded that so many people are affected by this terrible disease and we pray that those who are find strength and hope. Surround yourselves with love, God, family and friends and anything is possible.

Love to all and thank you!

Heather, Alec and Millie

What Cancer Cannot Do

Found this poem and could not agree more...

Cancer is so limited

It cannot cripple love
It cannot shatter hope
It cannot corrode faith
It cannot destroy peace
It cannot kill friendship
It cannot suppress memories
It cannot silence courage
It cannot invade the soul
It cannot steal eternal life
It cannot conquer the spirit.
